Hyderabad: Days after a woman died and more than 20 people fell ill due to food poisoning after eating momos at a roadside food stall in the Nandi Nagar area, six men were arrested, Hyderabad police said.

A 31-year-old married woman from Singadikunta died on October 27, and over 20 others were hospitalized after they allegedly consumed momos from a roadside eatery. Following the incident, several individuals filed complaints with the Banjara Hills police.

The police had registered two cases under the charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other relevant sections of the BNS Act. Subsequently, the police investigated the matter. Authorities also collected food samples from the vendor for testing.

The investigation revealed that the momos vendor was running his stall without any food safety licence. He was also preparing the food in unhygienic conditions. Following a complaint from the victim’s family, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's (GHMC) food safety department and police inspected the food stall and two people were detained by the police.

Against this backdrop, the Telangana government announced a one-year ban on the production, storage, and sale of mayonnaise, also known as mayo, made from raw eggs. Recently, many people have raised complaints linking the product to suspected food poisoning cases.

“As per the observations during enforcement activities and complaints received from the public, mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected to be a cause of food poisoning in multiple incidents in the past few months,” according to an order issued by Telangana’s Commissioner of Food Safety on Wednesday.
