Hyderabad: The Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT) and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU) have expressed serious concerns following the suspension of Zepto’s food business license in Mumbai. The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took this step after inspecting Zepto’s Dharavi facility and uncovering expired food products, fungal contamination, and unsanitary storage conditions.

This development comes amid an ongoing indefinite strike by Zepto delivery workers in Hyderabad, protesting against low wages, unsafe working conditions, and the absence of basic protections. Shaik Salauddin, National General Secretary of IFAT and President of TGPWU, highlighted that the struggle is not just about wages but also about workers’ dignity and identity. He criticized Zepto for neglecting both consumer safety and worker rights, despite the company’s rapid expansion and profits.

TGPWU has filed a formal complaint with the Telangana Labour Department, highlighting several violations by Zepto. These include inadequate pay for high-risk delivery assignments and unreasonable pressure to meet 10-minute delivery targets, which increase mental and physical stress as well as the risk of road accidents. Additionally, workers face a lack of access to restrooms and clean break areas, and there is no grievance redressal system or medical support available for them.

In light of these concerns, IFAT and TGPWU have demanded immediate coordinated action from state and central authorities. They are calling for a national-level audit of Zepto’s operations focusing on food safety and labor law compliance. They also insist that all dark stores, warehouses, Instamart hubs, and quick-commerce fulfillment centers be included in inspections. Further, they urge joint inspections by Food Safety and Labour Departments in collaboration with TGPWU.

The unions have also requested a tripartite meeting involving the Labour Department, Zepto management, and TGPWU to address the workers’ strike. They have called for enforcement of accountability through fines, suspension of licenses, or legal proceedings wherever violations are found. “We are not disposable,” Salauddin stated. “Gig workers deserve dignity, protection, and fair wages. Companies like Zepto must be held accountable in every city where they operate.”
