York Cinemas cancels Pawan Kalyan OG shows in Canada
HYDERABAD: York Cinemas, a leading distributor of Indian films in Canada, has cancelled all screenings of Pawan Kalyan’s upcoming film They Call Him OG, citing public safety risks and business malpractice concerns.
In a press statement released on X, the company said it had “serious concerns” about cultural and political factors linked to the film’s release in North America. “York Cinemas has become increasingly concerned that the distribution of OG in North America could pose a potential risk to public safety and security,” the statement read.
Allegations of inflated box office figures
The distributor alleged that individuals connected with the North American release of OG had asked them to artificially inflate ticket sales figures. According to York Cinemas, this was an attempt to boost the market value of future South Asian films and to gain control over the regional film industry.
“York Cinemas has previously faced requests by individuals affiliated with the distributor of OG in North America to artificially inflate sales numbers to increase the economic value of future South Asian films,” the company said.
Concerns over cultural divide
The statement further claimed that attempts were being made to create divisions within South Asian communities in North America along political and social lines. “We will not engage in unethical business practices,” the company added.
Refunds assured
York Cinemas confirmed that all patrons who booked tickets in advance will receive full refunds. “The safety of our patrons, employees and the public remains our top priority,” the distributor said.
