Woman killed after being hit by HMWSSB water tanker in Manikonda
Hyderabad: A woman died after being hit by a Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) water tanker on the Manikonda Pipeline Road on Tuesday morning, July 29, 2025.
The victim, identified as Iruvuru Shalini, was a resident of BRC Apartments in Manikonda. According to the reports, she was returning home on a scooter after dropping her daughter at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan school, as the child had missed the school bus. Shalini died on the spot.
Local residents allege that the increasing demand for water tankers in the area has led to reckless driving by tanker operators. They claim that the vehicles are often driven at high speeds, endangering commuters and pedestrians.
Shalini’s husband resides in Visakhapatnam. The tragic incident has sparked fresh concerns over road safety and infrastructure in Manikonda, with locals urging the government to take immediate steps to prevent further accidents.
This is the latest in a series of fatal accidents on Manikonda roads. Earlier this year, on January 28, a 10-year-old girl, Gaddam Atharvi, was killed when a speeding lorry hit the scooter she was riding with her father near Shaikpet. Atharvi, a Class 5 student at Delhi School of Excellence, died on the spot. Her father suffered minor injuries.
On August 30, 2024, a Class 6 student, Kameshwari of Johnson Grammar School, died after a lorry struck the scooter carrying her, her mother Santoshi, and younger brother Vedansh, a second-grade student. The incident occurred while they were returning home from school. Kameshwari was thrown to the opposite side of the road and fatally run over by the lorry. Her mother and brother survived with injuries.
In another incident on August 17, 2024, Ranga Sathvika, a 16-year-old Class 10 student at Gowtham Model School, was killed when a tipper lorry rammed into an auto parked behind an RTC bus in Tarnaka. Sathvika, a resident of Kimtee Colony, died at the scene. The auto driver was seriously injured.
