'Matka is a commercial mass film, not socio-political': Actor Varun Tej
Hyderabad: Actor Varun Tej's upcoming gangster film 'Matka', directed by Karuna Kumar and produced by Rajini Talluri and Dr. Vijeyender Reddy Theegala under SRT Entertainments and Vyra Entertainments, is set to release on November 14. The film features Meenakshi Chaudhary and Nora Fatehi in lead roles, with music by GV Prakash Kumar.
In a recent media interaction, Varun Tej revealed that 'Matka' follows the story of Vasu, a Burmese refugee who arrives in Vizag. The narrative spans from 1958 to 1982, chronicling his rise. While the character draws inspiration from Matka King Ratan Khatri, the director adapted the story to Telugu nativity, creating an original narrative distinct from Khatri's Mumbai-Pakistan background.
Discussing his preparation, Tej mentioned extensive script reading sessions and detailed character development. "As Vasu comes from Burma, his accent evolves with his character's journey. Along with his age, both his language and accent are polished to suit his status," he explained. The actor praised the production design and multiple script reading sessions that helped him embody the character.
The film features four different looks for Tej's character, a challenge he embraced enthusiastically. "After Gaddala Konda Ganesh, I was looking for a performance-driven story, and Matka came at the right time," he shared. The actor emphasized that 'Matka' is a commercial mass film, not a socio-political commentary. The film showcases Vasu's character transformation, exploring both his virtuous and villainous sides.
Most of the film shot at Ramoji Film City
Shot primarily on large sets at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, except for scenes at Yarada Beach and Kakinada Port, the U/A-rated film features nine action sequences, particularly intense in the second half's revenge drama. GV Prakash Kumar, known for 'Gangs of Wasseypur's background score, has composed four songs and what Tej describes as "stunning" background music that "takes the movie to the next level."
Regarding the cast, Tej revealed that Meenakshi Chaudhary's character emotionally supports Vasu throughout the story, with a significant twist in their relationship. Nora Fatehi also plays a crucial role, delivering what he termed a "fantastic performance." The film's audio album has already become a chartbuster hit.
"This is a movie targeted at the mass audience with a proper commercial outlook. Everyone will like it," Tej concluded, expressing confidence in the film's appeal.
