Hyderabad: Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms battered Hyderabad on Monday evening, throwing life out of gear and triggering severe traffic disruptions across the city. The sudden and intense downpour led to widespread waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas, leaving several roads submerged and many commuters stranded.
In Secunderabad, key areas such as Paradise Circle, Marredpally, and Tarnaka witnessed knee-deep water, severely affecting the evening commute. Traffic came to a standstill as vehicles moved at a snail’s pace or were stalled due to rising water levels. Pedestrians and two-wheeler riders took shelter under flyovers, bus stops, and shop awnings to escape the heavy rain.
Reports of waterlogging and traffic jams poured in from multiple localities including Rasulpura, Kapra, RP Road, SP Road, Patny crossroads, Habsiguda, Dr AS Rao Nagar, Neredmet, Malkajgiri, ECIL crossroads, and Alwal. These areas remained among the worst affected, with stormwater drains overflowing and road visibility reduced.
Local authorities, along with traffic police, were seen on the ground trying to regulate vehicle movement and drain out stagnant water. Emergency response teams were deployed at key points to address traffic snarls and prevent further inconvenience to the public.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad-based weather tracker T Balaji, known as Telangana Weatherman on X (formerly Twitter), issued an alert ahead of the storm. “Dear people of Hyderabad. It’s going to be a dangerous thunderstorm for the entire city. I am repeating it again. Please stay indoors. Massive cumulonimbus is developing. 50 mm of rainfall is expected in a very short time. Please stay alert,” he posted.
The India Meteorological Department has not yet issued an official statement, but weather updates are being closely monitored as the city braces for more rain in the coming hours. Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious.
