Over 50 students had fallen ill after having dinner at their Ashram High School hostel in Wankidi Mandal on October 30. Most of the students were treated for food poisoning at the local hospital and were subsequently discharged by the medical team.

Shaila and fellow students Mahalakshmi (14) and K Jyothi (13) were admitted to the NIMS Hospital on November 5 after early treatment at the local medical facility. They had developed acute gastroenteritis, which resulted in dehydration and kidney issues. She was put on a ventilator for 25 days. However, the doctors could not save her life.

According to reports, Shailaja was off the ventilator within 3 days after she showed some improvement in her condition. The doctors also started giving her an oral diet, and she could talk and move. However, in a couple of days, she suffered a respiratory problem. She was again put on a ventilator as her condition was stated to be critical. Two other students, Mahalakshmi and Jyothi, are said to be stable, and they are expected to be discharged soon.
