Surprise drunk driving check at Tolichowki: Four booked
Hyderabad: Tolichowki Traffic Police conducted a surprise drunk driving check on Tolichowki Main Road on Friday, July 11, 2025, booking four individuals between 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The drive was part of an effort to reduce road accidents and address the belief that such checks are carried out only at night.
Hyderabad Traffic Police stated that similar unannounced checks will continue at different times and locations, especially in key and vulnerable areas, to promote road safety.
Separately, a citizen named Koushik raised concerns on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) about overloaded autos transporting school children. Though the cases he mentioned fall under Cyberabad jurisdiction, he requested attention in Hyderabad as well. Hyderabad Traffic Police responded, saying they will look into the issue.
Over the weekend of July 5 and 6, Cyberabad Traffic Police held a special drive targeting drunk driving and booked 627 individuals. Among them, 458 were riding two-wheelers, 39 were operating three-wheelers, 116 were driving four-wheelers and 14 were behind the wheel of heavy vehicles.
Based on blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels, 548 people had BAC between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Forty-eight registered BAC levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, while 31 recorded between 301 mg/100 ml and 500 mg/100 ml.
Cyberabad Police warned that anyone driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This section refers to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a prison term of up to 10 years along with a fine.
A similar drive on June 6 and 7 led to 362 people being booked. Of these, 260 were on two-wheelers, 73 in four-wheelers, 24 in three-wheelers and five were driving heavy vehicles. Most of those booked had BAC levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Thirty had levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, and 16 were between 301 mg/100 ml and 500 mg/100 ml.
In terms of age, the highest number of cases was in the 31 to 40 group with 141 people. This was followed by 123 people aged 21 to 30. There were 74 people aged 41 to 50, 17 aged 51 to 60, four above 61 and three aged between 18 and 20. No minors were booked.
