Hyderabad: Despite it being Telangana Formation Day, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) received 23 complaints under its Prajavani public grievance program on Monday, June 2, 2025. Nearly 70% of these were related to drainage (nala) issues, with the rest concerning encroachments on roads, parks, and government land.

In Secunderabad, Tirumalagiri, and Sai Datta Gardens in Bhudevinagar, residents reported encroachment on a 225-square-yard plot originally allotted for a community hall. According to locals, the land was handed over to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in 2004, but no construction has taken place so far.

In Khanamet village under Serilingampally mandal, residents alleged that plots and roads in survey numbers 11/20 and 11/21, part of a layout developed by Gurukula Trust in 1983, have been encroached upon.

With the monsoon approaching, most complaints focused on nala encroachments. In Chikoti Gardens, Begumpet, residents of Brindavan Apartments raised concerns over flooding caused by a narrowed nala. They recalled that during the 2020 floods, the cellar of their building was submerged and fear a repeat this year.

In Kukatpally, residents reported encroachments in the Full Tank Level (FTL) area of Rangadhamauni Cheruvu. The nala connecting it to IDL Cheruvu has also been blocked, putting seven nearby colonies at risk of flooding. Locals demanded immediate removal of the encroachments to restore proper water flow.

Similar concerns were raised in Begumpet, where narrowing of the Hasmathpet and Picket nalas has led to repeated flooding. Residents from Payiga Colony, Viman Nagar, BHEL Colony, Avanti Colony, and Rasoolpura Basti said they were trapped in floodwaters during past rains.

In Saidabad and Balajinagar, members of the Balajinagar Welfare Association reported encroachments on both sewage and stormwater drains. They said that overflow from the lake near Owaisi Hospital should drain into Saroor Nagar lake via Adarsh Nagar, but narrowed channels are causing nearby slums to flood. Residents across Hyderabad urged authorities to act swiftly to remove encroachments on nalas and prevent monsoon-related flooding.
