TG vs TS debate: Telangana Transport Department issues clarification
Hyderabad: Many vehicle owners were confused after the Revanth Reddy-led government switched to the abbreviation ‘TG’ prefix in place of ‘TS’ for vehicle registration number plates in Telangana state.
To clarify the confusion, the Telangana Transport Department said that the “TG” prefix applies only to new vehicles bought after the government adopted the “TG” code as the official abbreviation for Telangana state.
Some people altered the state abbreviation from “TS” to “TG” on old vehicles, prompting the transport officials to issue a clarification. The officials warned the vehicle owners against changing the “TS” code on the existing vehicle registration number plates and added that it amounts to a criminal offense. They also said anyone found violating the law will face legal action under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
A few months ago, the Union government approved the Telangana government’s proposal to use the ‘TG’ prefix for vehicle registration number plates instead of the ‘TS’ in Telangana. Following a gazette notification from the Centre, the Telangana Chief Secretary issued a government order stating that “TG” will henceforth be adopted in all official documents, GOs, circulars, and other communication channels.
