Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services quickly responded after a blaze erupted in two apartment units on the 1100 block of Cullom Street. By the time the fire personnel reached the location and started firefighting operations, the fire which erupted on the second floor had completely gutted the apartment building with two units. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The Telugu students, who are enrolled in the University of Alabama, were staying in the now damaged apartment units. While sharing an update on the fire incident, an Instagram page called nris_adda quoted an affected student as saying, “Yesterday around 6:20 PM, a massive fire broke out in our building, affecting 2 apartments where 10 of us — all Telugu students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham — were living. We tried using fire extinguishers, but the fire spread too quickly. Most of us managed to escape through the back door, but one of our friends got trapped due to heavy smoke inhalation.

Thanks to the quick response of firefighters, he was rescued. Right now, 2 of our friends are in the ICU, but their condition is stable (sic).”

The student further noted that the fire burned all their belongings including clothes and documents. “We are grateful to be alive, but it’s tough time for all of us,” he said in conclusion.

According to CBS42, a fire incident was reported at around 6:21 pm at the 1100 block of Cullom Street in Birmingham city on Friday. While responding to an apartment fire, the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services personnel rescued a total of four occupants from the fire.

Battalion Chief Clay Hendon told reporters that, “Two occupants were treated on scene and released, and two were taken to area hospitals for treatment.”

He added that four apartments were damaged in the fire, and as a result, four families are currently displaced.
