Telangana Govt to provide Indiramma housing for transgender community under disability quota
Hyderabad: Telangana Minister for Panchayat Raj, Rural Development, Water, and Women & Child Welfare, Danasari Anasuya (Seethakka), on Monday, May 26, 2025, announced that members of the transgender community will be allotted Indiramma housing under the disability quota. She also said that Maitri Clinics will be established in districts to provide healthcare services tailored to their needs.
The announcements were made during a review meeting at the Secretariat in Hyderabad, attended by senior government officials, transgender NGO representatives, and transgender individuals appointed as Traffic Assistants under a pilot project launched in December 2024.
Telangana had appointed 44 transgender persons as Traffic Assistants in Hyderabad, becoming the first state to employ them in such roles in government. Of these, 38 are currently serving in the Hyderabad City Police Traffic Department.
Speaking at the meeting, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand said the recruitment was completed in 10 days following directions from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He stated that no complaints have been registered against the Traffic Assistants in the past six months, and they are working effectively alongside regular police staff. He also said the department is willing to support those interested in private security jobs and urged them to continue performing their duties responsibly.
Secretary of Women Development and Child Welfare, Anitha Ramachandran, said the initiative has drawn attention from other states. She added that based on the six-month report, the government plans to expand the recruitment of transgender persons in other departments and districts.
Traffic officials reported that the transgender assistants are working diligently and in coordination with police station staff. They are also participating in traffic management duties during events and other deployments.
Members of the transgender community who were appointed as Traffic Assistants expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and the government. They said the opportunity had given them a sense of dignity and respect in society. They also stated that they now feel safe and proud to work alongside the police force, a sharp contrast from the fear and stigma they previously experienced.
They requested that the government extend facilities available to home guards to them as well. They welcomed the decision to provide them with the same uniform as home guards, describing it as a move toward equality.
The Telangana government said it would continue efforts to create more job opportunities for the transgender community in government sectors, aiming to integrate them fully into mainstream society.
