Telangana records 6.2% of suicide rate, fifth highest in India
HYDERABAD: Telangana has ranked among the top five states and Union Territories with the highest suicide rate in 2023, according to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state recorded a suicide rate of 27.7 per lakh population, more than double the national average of 12.3.

NCRB figures show that India reported 1,71,418 suicides in 2023, marking a 0.3% rise over 2022, though the national suicide rate dipped by 0.8%. Telangana contributed 6.2% of all suicides in the country.
Family issues, illness drive high share of suicides in state
That year, family problems and illness caused 4,680 or 44.2% of the total 10,593 suicides in Telangana, underscoring concerns about social stress and mental health in the state.
The data also highlights education-linked vulnerability. Telangana accounted for 13.6% of suicides among people with no formal education, the highest share in the country.
Within the rankings, Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the highest suicide rate at 49.6, followed by Sikkim (40.2), Kerala (30.6), Puducherry (28.0), and Telangana (27.7).
The NCRB clarified that suicide rates for non-census years are calculated using projected population figures, while actual census data is used for 2011.
