Telangana prisons record milestone as 28 inmates complete degrees
HYDERABAD: Twenty-eight inmates from different prisons in Telangana have successfully completed their undergraduate programmes under Dr B. R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU). According to the Prisons Department, the graduates include 25 men and three women. Nine inmates – eight from Central Prison Cherlapalli and one from Central Prison Hyderabad – attended the ceremony along with four released prisoners, three from Cherlapalli and one from Special Prison for Women, Hyderabad. They received their graduation certificates from Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma.
Education part of reform efforts
Dr Soumya Mishra, IPS, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Telangana, congratulated the graduates and praised their determination to rebuild their lives through education. She stated that correctional services focused on reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration. “The success of these graduates reflects the sustained efforts of the department in making prisoners constructive, responsible individuals,” she added.
Study centre at Cherlapalli jail
The inmates pursued their studies through a BRAOU study centre located at Central Prison Cherlapalli. The Prisons Department described the achievement as a milestone in correctional education and said it took pride in supporting such initiatives. Officials stated that their vision symbolised the convocation, showing that transformation can be achieved through knowledge, dignity of labour, and opportunities for a better future.
