Telangana Govt announces Rs. 1 crore accident insurance for 51,868 electricity staff
Hyderabad: In a landmark move, the Telangana government has signed an agreement to provide ₹1 crore accident insurance coverage to 51,868 electricity department employees. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu at an event held at Praja Bhavan on Tuesday.
Highlighting the dedication of electricity staff, who work around the clock even during natural disasters, the Deputy CM emphasized the need to secure the families of these employees. “From linemen to CMDs, all employees have families. This insurance scheme aims to protect them from the disruption caused by unforeseen accidents,” he said.
The scheme comes at no cost to employees and offers ₹1 crore accident insurance. Employees suffering permanent disability will be eligible for compensation up to ₹80 lakh. In the event of natural death, coverage of up to ₹10 lakh will be provided, with a combined limit of ₹20 lakh for the employee and four family members.
Employees with SBI accounts will also benefit from financial assistance such as education and marriage loans. The scheme allows access to these services even with zero account balance and waives charges for ATM cards and cheque books.
Deputy CM Bhatti recalled his earlier work as a bank director, where he helped introduce education loans and Kisan credit cards to benefit rural and low-income families. He said this new initiative would provide similar financial relief to electricity employees for education and marriage needs.
Pointing to the power department’s critical role in the state’s economy, the Deputy CM said, “Electricity is as essential to production as oxygen is to human survival. Even a brief power disruption can cause major consequences.” He congratulated the staff for maintaining uninterrupted electricity supply despite peak demand reaching 17,162 MW in 2025, about 2,000 MW higher than in 2023.
The Deputy CM also highlighted Telangana’s progress in infrastructure projects such as the Regional Ring Road, Musi River Rejuvenation, and the Future City initiative. He noted that the state is attracting global investments and advancing towards its goal of generating 20,000 MW of green energy by 2030, following the introduction of the 2025 New Green Energy Policy.
The event was attended by Energy Department CMD Sandeep Kumar Sultania, TRANSCO CMD Krishna Bhaskar, and other officials. The government expressed confidence that the insurance scheme would bring security and confidence to the families of electricity employees and encouraged staff to continue contributing to the sector’s growth.
