Govt’s in-principle nod for relaxation in detention policy in OU for 2024-25
Hyderabad: In a major relief to the students, the Telangana government has decided to relax the detention system in Osmania University.
During the Question Hour in the Telangana Legislative Assembly, the health minister C Damodar Raja Narasimha said the detention system has been continuing in the Osmania University for a long time. The detention policy was implemented for the engineering batches from the academic year 2020-21 to 2022-23 due to Covid-19 pandemic and the same continued in 2023-24 too.
“This detention policy was relaxed for a few years during the Covid-19 pandemic. In-principle, the detention policy will be relaxed this year too,” the minister informed the House.
The minister was responding to a request made by All India Majlis e Itthadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) floor leader and Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi. He had also requested a similar relaxation for students of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) affiliated colleges in the state.
Raising the issue of engineering students in the House, Owaisi said the sudden implementation of the detention system has caused hardship to students owing to the variations in the syllabus and the detention policy in different colleges. The MIM floor leader requested the state government to implement uniform detention policy across the universities in the state. The regulatory powers of the universities pertaining to autonomous colleges should be much more stringent with respect to matters of passing, promoting and detention.
Responding to the concerns of the MIM MLA, the minister said only those in the state-run universities are being detained while the autonomous colleges are not. This is negatively affecting job prospects for the students.
Damodar Raja Narasimha further stated that the government will call for a meeting with the management of educational institutions, including engineering colleges in the state and discuss issues pertaining to detention policy, credits, conducting re-examinations, re-admission and fee reimbursement policy.
