Telangana Government forms SIT to investigate online betting cases
Hyderabad: The Telangana Government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate online betting cases thoroughly. The team will function under the supervision of the Director General (DG) of Police, CID/Additional DG, CID.
The SIT includes M. Ramesh, IPS, Inspector General of Police for Provisions & Logistics; Ch. Sindhu Sharma, IPS, SP of Intelligence in Hyderabad; K. Venkata Lakshmi, SP of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in the CID; S. Chandrakanth, Additional SP attached to Cyberabad; and M. Shankar, DSP in the EOW, CID.
The team will also have the authority to seek assistance from financial experts, law officers, auditors, or forensic specialists, subject to approval by the DG, CID or Additional DG, CID.
The SIT’s primary responsibility is to investigate all online betting cases assigned to it, as well as examine the online betting ecosystem and recommend strategies to combat these activities. The team will also evaluate the existing legal provisions and propose reforms to prevent the promotion, organization, and advertisement of online betting and gaming.
Additionally, the SIT will assess the role of various central and state agencies, such as the IT Department, GST authorities, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Department of Prosecution, in regulating online gaming. It will recommend measures to enhance enforcement against illegal betting and gambling.
The SIT will also suggest regulatory changes for payment systems and financial institutions to detect and block transactions linked to illegal betting. These recommendations will be submitted to the Reserve Bank of India.
All government departments and agencies in Telangana are required to provide necessary assistance to the SIT in carrying out its duties. The team will also review the current legal framework governing online betting and gaming and suggest amendments to strengthen both state and central laws.
The SIT may undertake any additional tasks related to online gambling or gaming as directed by the Director General of Police (DGP), Telangana, or the DG/ADG, CID. To ensure compliance with government regulations, the SIT will analyze the financial flow at various levels and work with the relevant agencies.
The SIT is expected to submit its comprehensive report to the Telangana Government through the Director General of Police within 90 days.
