3.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Northern Telangana on May 5, 2025

Hyderabad: A minor earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck northern Telangana on Monday, May 5, 2025, at 6:50 p.m. The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, near Kumram Bheem Asifabad. Though classified as a minor quake, tremors were felt across several districts, prompting panic among residents.

Residents of Jannaram and Luxettipet mandals in Mancherial district, Kaddampeddur and Khanapur in Nirmal, and Goleti village in Rebbena mandal of Kumram Bheem Asifabad reported feeling the tremors, which lasted for about two to three seconds. People rushed out of their homes in fear of structural damage.

The tremors were also felt in Karimnagar, Rajanna Siricilla, Nizamabad, and parts of Nirmal. In Gangadhara, Choppadandi, Ramadugu, Kammarpally, and Mortad mandals, the shaking lasted around two seconds. In Nirmal district’s Kadem, Jannaram, Khanapur, and Laxmanchanda mandals, the tremors lasted between two to five seconds.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, though the tremors left residents uneasy.

This earthquake follows a series of tremors in the region in recent months. On December 4, 2024, a stronger earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Mulugu, Telangana. The tremors from this earthquake were felt across the state, including in Hyderabad. It was described as one of the strongest quakes to hit the region in the past 20 years.

Additionally, another earthquake measuring 3.0 struck Mahabubnagar, Telangana, on December 7, 2024. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, but no significant damage or casualties were reported at that time.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) issued the following details of the May 5 earthquake via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, “EQ of M: 3.8, On: 05/05/2025 18:50:22 IST, Lat: 19.21 N, Long: 79.41 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Kumram Bheem Asifabad, Telangana.”
