Ponnam thanks Defence Ministry for land transfer, flags ₹1,000 crore dues
HYDERABAD: Telangana minister in charge of Hyderabad Ponnam Prabhakar has written to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Defence for positively considering the request. “I thank the Defence Ministry for favourably examining the proposal to transfer certain defence lands to the state government for vital public purposes,” he wrote.
The letter, co-signed by GHMC mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, Rajya Sabha member Anil Kumar Yadav, and Secunderabad Cantonment MLA Ganesh, sought an early decision on handing over portions of land in Hyderabad and Secunderabad for civic and infrastructure projects.
Call for dues clearance
The minister noted that user charges amounting to about ₹1,000 crore are pending with the Secunderabad Cantonment Board. He said timely clearance of these dues would help the state government improve infrastructure and sustain civic services in cantonment areas.
Emphasis on civic projects
Prabhakar stressed that the land transfer was crucial for implementing mobility and infrastructure projects in Hyderabad. “He said we need to expedite the handover process to ensure timely execution of ongoing projects important for the city’s growth and public convenience.” The minister also drew attention to the delay in Secunderabad Cantonment Board elections. “Elections have not been held for several years. For democratic governance and local representation, I urge you to take necessary steps to conduct them at the earliest,” he said.
Prabhakar said he was confident the Defence Ministry would take a considered decision on these issues, which he described as vital for Hyderabad’s development.
