Hyderabad : While there is a discussion on the reduced count of Olympic medal tally for India in the Paris Olympics, 2024, there are brainstorming sessions going on how to improve it further. A similar discussion was raised by Anand Mahindra, the Chairman of Mahindra Group of Companies wondering what could be done for the improvement of India in the Olympic sports on his X account. Responding to the same, Telangana Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy pichted and proposed establishment of a Young India Sports University in Telangana.

This year, India has gained only six medals in the Paris Olympics 2024, while China stood at the top with 91 medals in total. Speaking about the same, Anand Mahindra said, “I’m extremely proud, of course, of our valiant medal winners of the Paris Olympics. But I have to confess a sense of distress when seeing our overall ranking plummet. Everyone usually has a great theory about what we need to do to live up to our potential & garner a respectable number of medals given our population.

Stating that he is confused, Anand Mahindra said, “But I admit I’ve run out of thoughts and am confused. The Government has clearly spent a good deal of money & the incentives upon winning are plentiful—both at state & national level. The quality of sports infrastructure has dramatically improved. Both within the public & private sectors. The Private sector players have chipped in handsomely, most notably OGQ, Jindal Sports. Schools have put more emphasis on sport. Even the national mindset has changed & there is a huge interest in our athletes & we celebrate them with fervour. So WHAT on earth is it that prevents us from finding world-beating talent in Olympic sports??”

Revanth Reddy pitches in with ideas for Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

Responding to the same, Revanth Reddy said, “Dear Anand Mahindra ji, Your words, the core emotions of love for our country and belief in the immense potential of Indian youth, resonate deeply with me. I was waiting to share this privately but am choosing to share it here because it would be something the youth of India are keenly wanting to know. I also had this deep angst about the gap between potential and performance for a long while now. Along with the Young India Skills University (YISU), I have been working on the concept of “Young India Sports University” for Telangana for a while.”

Further sharing details about his recent trip to South Korea, CM said, “On my recent trip to South Korea, I met a top delegation of the KNSU (Korea National Sports University), including its president Moon Won-Jae. We had detailed discussions for a partnership between KNSU and the proposed YISU, and they have agreed in principle to partner with us in establishing it in Hyderabad.”

Meanwhile, Revanth Reddy also revealed that in the 72 hours that the government has frozen the 200-acre campus in Hakimpet, Gachibowli stadium besides harnessing all the existing stadium and facilities, which will upgrade to Olympics-grade quality and specifications.

Revanth Reddy further invited Anand Mahindra to help create an infrastructure to turnaround the performance for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. “I want to ensure Telangana harnesses the potential of youth from not only our state, but also the country, to give India the gift of several medals. Together, let us do it for #Telangana, our youth, and #India,” added Revanth Reddy.
