Telangana CM Revanth Reddy pledges to transform Osmania University into Oxford-level institution
Hyderabad: In a landmark visit to Osmania University (OU), the first by a sitting Chief Minister in over two decades, Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy made a series of ambitious announcements, vowing to elevate the historic institution to the stature of world-renowned Oxford University. He announced a massive grant of Rs. 1,000 crore and promised a new era of support for student welfare and academic excellence on Monday.
The Chief Minister inaugurated new buildings constructed at a cost of Rs. 90 crores and laid the foundation stone for a new Rs. 80-crore hostel that will accommodate 1,200 students.
Tribute to OU's legacy
In a speech delivered at the Tagore Auditorium, CM Reddy recalled OU's indelible role in Telangana's history. "Osmania University stands as a symbol for Telangana," he said. He noted that figures like PV Narasimha Rao, Jaipal Reddy, George Reddy, and Gaddar were shaped there. He also mentioned that student sacrifices were key to the state's formation.
He strongly criticized the previous regime, saying the university, once a stronghold of awareness, had become weakened by 'conspiracy' over the years. He announced, “After I came, I have been solving each and every problem. We will take OU to the level of Oxford University. Let's make OU a wonderful university.”
Direct dialogue with students
He announced his intention to return in December to hold a meeting at the iconic Arts College. He said, "Next time I will visit OU again. Do not put a single policeman. Then even if the students protest, I will not say anything.” He urged the students to engage directly, stating, “Write down what you want. I will issue you the GO (Government Order) on the spot on the same day.” Emphasizing that his goal was to solve problems, he questioned, “I want to solve the problems of the students, why should I not come to OU?”.
Blueprint for an academic revolution
To translate his vision into reality, the Chief Minister directed officials to form an expert committee to prepare a comprehensive plan for developing OU into a world-class research hub. “I am ready to develop this university at Oxford level. Prepare the necessary plans. This government is ready to provide funds,” he asserted.
Positioning education as the ultimate solution, CM Reddy said, “Only education can change the fate of the poor. Only education will make you virtuous and rich.” While encouraging students to rightfully protest against injustices, he urged them not to hinder those who come with solutions.
