Telangana CM announces proposal to rename Cherlapally Railway Terminal after Potti Sreeramulu
Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, during the Legislative Assembly session on Monday, March 17, 2025, announced that the newly renovated Cherlapally Railway Terminal would be renamed after Potti Sreeramulu. He added that a formal request would be made to Union Ministers K. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay to seek the necessary permissions from the central government for the change.
In another significant move, Revanth Reddy proposed renaming the Balkampet Nature Cure Hospital after former Chief Minister Rosaiah, along with plans to unveil a statue of him at the location to honor his service.
"I am not sure whether politics or the thoughts of our leaders have become polluted," Revanth Reddy remarked. "No one is undermining the efforts of Potti Sreeramulu. We must remember and honor his sacrifice."
Revanth Reddy defended the renaming of several institutions in Telangana, explaining that these changes were part of the state’s efforts to recognize the contributions of those who played a key role in the formation of Telangana. He noted that this process has been ongoing since the bifurcation of the state ten years ago, and some groups have been trying to create misconceptions around it. "It is inappropriate for those in central positions to indulge in such actions," Revanth Reddy said.
The CM also addressed the renaming of universities in the state, including the renaming of NTR Health University to Kalaji Narayana Rao Health University, Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University to Professor Jayashankar Agricultural University, and the renaming of the Horticulture University after Konda Laxman Bapuji. The Venkateswara Veterinary University has also been renamed to PV Narasimha Rao Veterinary University.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy clarified that the renaming of Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University to Suravaram Pratap Reddy University was necessary to avoid administrative confusion with institutions in Andhra Pradesh carrying similar names. He highlighted that these changes were made in the interest of clear administration and were not intended to disrespect anyone.
The Chief Minister also criticized political leaders who use caste and religion as tools for political gain, stating, "We will not make the mistake of renaming public institutions for political advantage," referencing the recent name change of a stadium in Gujarat from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s name to that of Prime Minister Modi.
Revanth Reddy concluded by stressing that the renaming decisions were made in the spirit of honoring the contributions of important historical figures to the state, rather than being driven by divisive political agendas.
