Telangana leads India in mobile recovery with over 78,000 phones traced via CEIR portal
Hyderabad: Telangana has topped the country in the recovery of stolen and missing mobile phones through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, with 78,114 devices recovered as of May 19, 2025. According to the CEIR dashboard, the state ranks first in the country, despite joining the system nearly eight months after its initial rollout in pilot states. The highest number of recoveries have been reported from Hyderabad Commissionerate with 11,879 devices, followed by Cyberabad Commissionerate with 10,385 devices, and Rachakonda Commissionerate with 8,681 devices.
The CEIR portal, developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is designed to tackle mobile phone theft and the circulation of counterfeit devices. In Telangana, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) serves as the nodal agency for implementation, and the system is now active across all 780 police stations in the state. The CEIR portal was first launched on September 5, 2022, in pilot states including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi, and the North Eastern States. Telangana began using the portal on April 19, 2023, but has since surpassed all others in mobile recovery efforts.
According to the officials, the success is attributed to the dedicated efforts of field-level officers, who have consistently acted on reported cases through the CEIR portal. These officers regularly monitor traceability reports, identify individuals in possession of lost or stolen phones, and ensure the recovered devices are returned to their rightful owners.
Public access to the system has also played a significant role. The Telangana Police, in coordination with the DoT, has integrated the CEIR portal with the TG Police Citizen Portal. Citizens can report lost or stolen phones through the official website www.tspolice.gov.in or directly via www.ceir.gov.in. The initiative has received positive feedback from the public, with many citizens successfully recovering their devices through the system. The CEIR portal continues to serve as a practical tool for both law enforcement and the public.
Director General, CID, Shikha Goel, IPS, commended the efforts of SP B. Gangaram, Cyber Crime, CID, and his team for their consistent coordination with DoT officials, including Hemant Rathwe (DDG Security), Nitika, ITS (Director Security), and Nambi Mridupani (JTO Security), in achieving this milestone.
