Hyderabad: At 46.25 percent of Telangana's total population of 3.70 crore, Backward Classes have emerged as the largest demographic group, excluding Muslim minorities, in the state, according to the caste survey.

The Congress government conducted the largest-ever Socio-Economic, Educational, Employment, Political, and Caste (SEEEPC) survey. The survey carried out by the Planning Department covered 96.9 percent of Telangana households in just 50 days.

The Planning Department submitted the survey reports to the Cabinet Sub-Committee, chaired by Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday.

Emphasizing the data-driven governance, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said that it would help the government in making better policy decisions for the upliftment of Backward Classes (BCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and other marginalized communities.
He announced that the survey report would be presented before the Cabinet on February 4 at 10:00 am, followed by a short discussion in the Assembly on the same day.

According to the survey report, Backward Classes (BCs) accounted for 1,64,09,179 people (46.25 percent), Scheduled Castes (SCs) 61,84,319 (17.43 percent), and Scheduled Tribes (STs) 37,05,929 (10.45 percent). The total Muslim population stood at 44,57,012 (12.56 percent), including 35,76,588 (10.08 percent) BC Muslims and 8,80,424 (2.48 percent) OC Muslims.

Other Open Category (OC) groups comprised 44,21,115 (13.31 percent), making the total OC population 15.79 percent.
