Student collapses in rush for snacks after Yoga Day event at Gachibowli Stadium
Hyderabad: A student collapsed during a stampede-like situation at the Gachibowli Stadium on Saturday morning, shortly after the conclusion of the International Yoga Day celebrations.
According to the reports, the incident occurred near Gate 2 when hundreds of students rushed to collect breakfast distributed at the venue.
Students from various schools and colleges had gathered for the event, organized by the Departments of AYUSH and Health. After the yoga session ended, the crowd surged towards the snack distribution area, leading to confusion and pushing. In the chaos, a girl fell unconscious.
Police personnel quickly responded and shifted the student to a hospital. The Yoga Day celebrations drew over 5,000 participants, including dignitaries, officials, students, and yoga practitioners.
Among the key attendees were Governor Dr. Jishnu Dev Varma, Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha, Sports Minister Vakkati Sridhar, Sports Authority Chairman Sivasena Reddy, and Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao.
In his address, Health Minister Raja Narasimha highlighted the relevance of yoga in addressing modern lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and kidney ailments. He credited sage Patanjali for introducing the Ashtanga Yoga system, which underpins contemporary yoga practice.
The minister urged the public to adopt yoga as a daily routine, highlighting its benefits for mental and physical well-being. He also outlined government initiatives to promote yoga in Telangana, including the appointment of 630 yoga instructors, regular classes at health sub-centers, and training programs that have reached over five lakh people in the past year.
Recruitment is underway for an additional 264 instructors, and efforts are ongoing to integrate yoga into school curricula. He also announced the launch of a postgraduate course in Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences to further strengthen yoga’s role in the public health system. International Yoga Day is observed annually on June 21, following its declaration by the United Nations in 2014.
