South Indian films suspended in Canada after theatre attacks
TORONTO: Screenings of South Indian films have been suspended across parts of Canada after recent attacks on theatres in Ontario.
Pawan Kalyan’s OG and Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter-1 were among the films whose shows were cancelled. Several Indian movies have also been removed from online booking lists.
According to theatre operators, the decision followed two attacks on a cinema in Ontario within a week. On September 25, two masked men poured liquid at the theatre entrance, triggering a small explosion that damaged the outer wall. On October 2, another masked man opened fire at the venue. No casualties were reported in either incident.
Film.Ca Cinemas in Oakville announced that screenings of OG and Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1 were being suspended. Its franchise CEO Jeff Knoll confirmed the move in a video message. York Cinemas in Richmond Hill also halted Indian films, citing safety concerns. It said all bookings would be refunded.
Operators in the Greater Toronto Area said other theatres are considering similar measures. Discussions are also underway in provinces including British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba.
Local sources said the attacks may be linked to Khalistani groups, noting similar incidents in the past. However, Halton police have not issued any official statement. Investigators urged the public to share any information related to the incidents.
