Open urination at Secunderabad Railway Station sparks public outcry
Hyderabad: Passengers and citizens have raised serious concerns over open urination near the newly constructed premises of Secunderabad Railway Station. The issue has been reported near the booking office, adjacent to the waiting hall, where lack of basic sanitation facilities is forcing people to relieve themselves in the open.
Citizens took to social media to draw attention to the problem. A post by the account Frustrated Urban Commuters (@HydWatch) on X (formerly Twitter) read, "In Secunderabad New railway stn beside Booking office (beside Waiting Hall room) people r urinating openly. Need Sulabh complexes around stn."
Another user, Sai Teja (@ActivistTeja), tagged multiple authorities, including @RailwaySeva, @RailMinIndia, @AshwiniVaishnaw, @drmsecunderabad, @rpfscr_sc, and @SrDCMSC, stating, "This is the condition of the Secunderabad Railway Station."
Speaking to Hyderabad Mail, Sai Teja said, “This is the condition of a newly developed railway station where basic facilities like toilets are missing. Despite raising the issue publicly, no action has been taken. Even after 24 hours, there has been no response from railway officials.” He added that platforms such as Hi Hyderabad have also flagged the issue, but authorities remain unresponsive.
“They paid ₹100 crore for this redevelopment. There is no justification for the absence of minimum infrastructure. If facilities are present and people violate the rules, fines can be imposed. But if there are no facilities at all, then responsibility lies with the administration,” he said.
Sai Teja also criticised the lack of sustained efforts under the Swachh Bharat initiative. “Cleanliness should not be a one-day affair observed on October 2. It should be a continuous process, maintained 365 days a year,” he said.
He urged the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Secunderabad, to take immediate action by installing public toilets, such as Sulabh complexes, and enforcing cleanliness rules. Commuters, he said, are facing daily inconvenience due to the unhygienic conditions near the station premises. As of now, there has been no official response from the concerned railway authorities.
