High tensions in Secunderabad amid protests over vandalism
Secunderabad: Tensions flared in Secunderabad on October 19, 2024, as local traders and residents protested against recent vandalism at a local worship place. The unrest was triggered by the desecration of an idol, which occurred in the early hours of October 14. Protestors gathered to express their outrage and demanded justice, prompting a strong response from local police, who used mild force to disperse the crowds.
Local businesses shut down
In a show of support, the protesters and local businesses across key areas, including RP Road, MG Road, Parklane, and General Bazar, remained closed throughout the day. Shops ranging from jewelry stores to pan shops joined the strike, significantly affecting daily commerce. Authorities announced that markets would reopen the following day.
Clashes between protesters and police
The situation escalated into fierce clashes between protesters and police. Activists reportedly threw slippers and chairs at law enforcement officials attempting to block the rally. In response, police resorted to a lathi-charge, resulting in confrontations that left several individuals injured.
Internet services suspended
Authorities suspended internet services in Secunderabad to maintain order amid the unrest. This measure aimed to prevent further communal clashes as tensions continued to rise. Police also clashed with protesters from a BJP party, adding to the turmoil in the region.
Investigation into vandalism leads to arrest
The individual responsible for the desecration has been identified as a 30-year-old resident of Maharashtra. He reportedly came to Hyderabad earlier this month to attend a month-long personality development workshop organised by a local academy.
During the investigation, authorities discovered that the venue for the workshop had been rented illegally without the necessary permissions.
Background of the accused
The police revealed that the accused is an engineering graduate who became self-radicalised after watching videos of controversial personalities online. This radicalisation fostered a growing disdain for certain practices. The accused has a history of similar offenses, with two cases pending against him in Mumbai.
