HYDERABAD: A member of the Telangana Legislative Council has appealed to chief minister A Revanth Reddy to withdraw his remarks against courts and lawyers, tender an apology, and give a written undertaking not to repeat them.

The appeal referred to Reddy’s September 28, 2025 speech at Meerkhanpet during the launch of a “future city” project. Addressing farmers and landowners, the CM cautioned them against going to courts, saying litigation would only drain their resources and benefit lawyers. Quoting his Telugu remarks, the letter translated them as: “Farmers who lost lands should not waste money running around the courts. Paying lawyers’ fees ruins households. Do not get into trouble just to keep lawyers alive or because parties instigate you.”

The MLC said such words insult advocates, discourage citizens from exercising their legal rights, and undermine constitutional courts.

Pattern of remarks

The letter pointed out earlier controversies. In August 2024, Reddy suggested that K Kavitha’s bail by the Supreme Court was the result of a “deal,” prompting the court to reprimand him. March 2025, his statement on defections drew sharp observations from the court. In April 2025, his comments on the Kancha Gachibowli tree-felling case were contradicted by the court’s stay order. The MLC termed this a “pattern of misconduct” showing disregard for judicial authority.

Call for corrective steps

Citing constitutional provisions, the appeal said the CM’s words violated Articles 32 and 226 on judicial review, and amounted to scandalising the judiciary. It demanded that he withdraw his remarks, apologise in the assembly and before citizens, and give a written assurance never to demean the judiciary or advocates again.
