Retired engineer from Vanasthalipuram duped of Rs. 1.5 crore by fraudsters posing as Supreme Court judge
Hyderabad: A retired chief engineer from Vanasthalipuram, Hyderabad, was duped of ₹1.5 crore by cybercriminals who impersonated a Supreme Court judge in an elaborate scam.
According to the information, the fraudsters created a fake virtual courtroom and introduced a person posing as a judge. They contacted the victim and claimed that his name had surfaced in a serious legal case being heard by the Supreme Court. The scammers told him that the judge was handling the matter personally and instructed him to be respectful during a video call.
During the call, a man posing as a Supreme Court judge warned the victim that the case was serious and that an arrest could follow. The impersonator then instructed the retired engineer to deposit money into what was claimed to be the Supreme Court’s account, assuring him that the amount would be returned once the case was resolved.
Believing the claim, the victim transferred ₹1.5 crore to the bank account provided. When the money was not returned and the fraudsters became unresponsive, he approached the Rachakonda Cybercrime Police and lodged a complaint. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
