Hyderabad: Students and faculty of Maheshwaram Government Medical College in Rangareddy district were taken by surprise on Tuesday when they arrived to find the college gates locked, allegedly due to non-payment of rent.

The newly established Government medical college was being run in one of the blocks of the Bharat Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET) on lease. The management of BIET claimed that despite reminders the unpaid rent was not cleared so they had no other option but to seal the building.

As per available information, the college principal discussed the matter with the building owner and resolved the issue. Principal Dr B Triveni said there was some misunderstanding and the classes are being conducted again.

The video of the padlocked premises quickly went viral on social media. Several social media users started tagging the Health MInister Damodar Rajanarsimha, chief minister Revanth Reddy and Union minister G Kishan Reddy to bring this concern to their attention and also demanded their intervention in this matter.

The incident also received attention from opposition leaders who slammed the government for the unfortunate situation. Criticising the Revanth Reddy-led government for the incident, BRS leader and former Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy said it was an ‘administrative failure’.

“Is this what you call governance? Is this the reflection of your administration, Telangana Chief Minister’s Office? KCR had issued orders to establish the government medical college with 176 crores….Justice should be done to the students and people of the district,” she tweeted.

The Maheshwaram Government Medical College was established under the ‘one medical college per district’ policy of the previous BRS government. The college has a yearly intake of 50 MBBS students for two years.
