Hyderabad: The southwest monsoon to bring extremely heavy rainfall in Telangana in the next 48 hours, as per the latest prediction released by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday. The IMD states that the rains are due to a ‘well marked low pressure area’, which is being formed over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal. The low pressure area and the cyclonic winds are likely to turn into a depression. The extreme heavy rainfall is likely to extend not only in the state of Telangana but also to its neighbouring states.

As per the IMD, the low pressure area to cross the South Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts by Tuesday afternoon, due to which, the several districts of Telangana are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

In recent times, the southwest monsoon has been active over Telangana, with several districts already experiencing intense rainfall. On Sunday, isolated areas in Kamareddy, Medak, and Siddipet recorded extremely heavy rainfall, while Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Mulugu, and Nizamabad reported very heavy showers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued colour-coded alerts for multiple districts, warning of continued downpours over the next 48 hours.

The low-pressure system, currently positioned off the north Andhra Pradesh/South Odisha coasts, is expected to concentrate into a depression by Monday evening. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 9.6 km above sea level, tilting southwestwards. As the system moves west-northwestwards, coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha will face the brunt, while Telangana remains on high alert for extreme weather.

Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Mahabubnagar, and Narayanpet are under Yellow Alert. Further, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mahabubabad districts are on Red Alert. Meanwhile, Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Siddipet, and Medak, among others, are on Orange Alert. Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are expected in isolated places across all districts.

The monsoon trough currently passes through key regions, including the low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. Meanwhile, an upper air cyclonic circulation over Vidarbha has merged with the monsoon trough, further influencing weather patterns. An east-west trough extending from the Bay of Bengal to Gujarat is also contributing to unstable weather conditions.

Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant, as waterlogging and flash floods may occur. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions to protect crops, while commuters are warned against travelling through waterlogged roads. The IMD continues to monitor the situation, with updates expected as the depression develops.

With the weather system likely to strengthen, Telangana braces for another spell of intense monsoon activity, raising concerns over flooding and disruptions in daily life.
