Rajasthan man held in Hyderabad with Rs. 3.5 lakh worth of opium
Hyderabad: The Shamshabad DTF, led by CI Praveen Kumar, arrested a man for possession and sale of opium in Panduranga Nagar, Attapur, Shadnagar, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The accused, identified as Dinesh, a native of Rajasthan, was allegedly transporting opium from Rajasthan and selling it in Hyderabad. Police seized 755 grams of opium from his shop, along with a mobile phone and a two-wheeler.
According to officials, Dinesh had been selling opium in 50-gram packets, each priced at ₹20,000. The total value of the seized opium is estimated at ₹3.5 lakh.
The seized items have been handed over to the Shamshabad Excise Station. Excise Superintendent Krishna Priya commended the team for the successful operation.
This follows a previous operation by the Prohibition and Excise Department, where officials uncovered an opium syndicate and seized around ₹2 crore worth of contraband on May 2, 2024. In that case, a joint team from the District Task Force, Prohibition and Excise, and Shamshabad SHO apprehended Dala Ram in Katedan, Rajendra Nagar, for smuggling opium from Rajasthan.
The officials intercepted a vehicle carrying 2.3 kg of opium, 29 kg of opium poppy powder, 44 kg of opium poppy straw, and 1,000 kg of mixed tobacco and poppy straw powder. The total value of the seized contraband was pegged at ₹1.73 crore.
Dala Ram, who was addicted to narcotics, allegedly began procuring and smuggling opium from Rajasthan, later supplying it to a local gutka manufacturer in Katedan. He would buy opium at ₹1,500 per 10 grams and sell it for ₹3,000 per 10 grams.
Officials are continuing to investigate the source of the opium and are working to identify the consumers in Hyderabad. Efforts are underway to apprehend additional suspects in the case.
Excise officials reminded the public that the procurement, sale, transport, or consumption of narcotics is a criminal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison or even death, under Section 31A of the NDPS Act.
