Rains fill twin reservoirs, Himayat Sagar gate lifted as precaution
Hyderabad: With continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas and in the city, the twin reservoirs, Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar, reached full capacity, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures. On Thursday night, the Water Board officials lifted one gate of Himayat Sagar by one foot, releasing 339 cusecs of water into the Musi River.
Himayat Sagar is currently receiving an inflow of 1,000 cusecs, while the outflow remains regulated at 339 cusecs to prevent sudden flooding downstream. The reservoir’s water level stands at 1,762.70 feet, just below its full capacity of 1,763.50 feet. Its current storage is 2.734 TMC against a total capacity of 2.970 TMC.
Authorities on alert
Managing Director of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSB), Ashok Reddy, has directed officials to stay vigilant and coordinate with the Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district administrations, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and the police to monitor the situation.
Of the reservoir’s 17 gates, only one has been lifted so far. Officials are closely tracking rainfall patterns and inflow rates to decide on further releases. Residents living along the Musi River have been advised to remain cautious.
With more rains forecast in the coming days, authorities are ensuring all necessary precautions are in place to manage water levels and prevent flooding in low-lying areas.
