Rachakonda cops issue traffic advisory amid congestion on Hyderabad-Vijayawada Highway
Hyderabad: As the Sankranti festival approaches, heavy traffic congestion has been reported on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway, with thousands of vehicles heading to their hometowns. The traffic situation has worsened near the Panthangi Toll Plaza, where vehicles have been backed up for several kilometers.
On January 10, authorities at the Panthangi toll plaza reported that around 55,000 vehicles had passed through in a single day. With the long weekend coinciding with school holidays and the festival, the city's roads have seen an influx of commuters.
The Rachakonda Police have issued a traffic advisory in response to the jams. Motorists traveling toward Andhra Pradesh are advised to avoid the route from Pedda Amberpet (EXIT-11) to Chityala via Choutuppal due to heavy traffic. Alternative routes include:
• Ghatkesar (EXIT-9) to Chityala via Bhuvanagiri, Valigonda, and Ramannapeta.
• The Bangalore (EXIT-121) gate to Guntur via Ibrahimpatnam, Mall, and Devarakonda.

Shamshabad Airport officials have also issued a travel advisory, anticipating a surge in passenger traffic. They recommend arriving 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours early for international departures. Travelers are advised to use DigiYatra for a smoother, contactless experience.
School Holidays Begin from January 13
In addition to the traffic disruptions, many students and parents are preparing for the upcoming school holidays. Schools in Hyderabad and across Telangana will be closed for the Sankranti festival from January 13 to 17, 2025, with institutions reopening on January 18. The extended vacation includes January 11, a second Saturday, and January 12, Sunday.
However, students may not have a chance to fully enjoy their break, as formative assessment exams are scheduled to begin shortly after the holidays.
The Sankranti festival is expected to bring further challenges to the region's transportation infrastructure, as families travel to celebrate the occasion.
