Hyderabad: An eight-foot Indian rock python was rescued from the crust gate of the Osman Sagar Reservoir on Sunday afternoon, October 20, 2024, in Hyderabad.
According to the reports, the staff from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) spotted a python weighing about 20 kilograms tangled in the crust gate of the Osman Sagar Reservoir. They quickly contacted the Friends of Snakes Society (FOS), a local snake rescue group.
Upon receiving the call, FOS member Dakarapu Vara Prasad rushed to the spot. The python was stuck in a tricky spot, making the rescue extremely difficult. Despite the risks, Vara Prasad used a rope to lower himself down and carefully held the snake’s head to keep it under control.
As he tried to lift the Indian rock python, it got more tangled and wrapped around his hand, preventing him from climbing back up. With quick thinking, other FOS members helped pull both him and the python to safety.
“It was a really risky job, especially because of the python’s size and strength, but we had to act quickly,” said Avinash Viswanathan, a member of the Friends of Snakes Society (FOS).
After the rescue, the python was taken to the Nehru Zoological Park for care and later released into the wild. The operation received praise from HMWSSB staff and bystanders for the bravery and skill shown by the FOS team.
