Psychiatrist Ends Life in Hyderabad, Husband and In-Laws Booked for Harassment
Hyderabad: A 33-year-old psychiatrist ended her life in the Sanathnagar Czech Colony area of Hyderabad, reportedly due to prolonged harassment by her husband and in-laws. The deceased, A. Rajitha, was employed as a child psychologist at a reputed international school.
Police said Rajitha had been facing consistent mental and physical harassment from her husband, Rohit, and his family. A case has been registered at the Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar Police Station based on a complaint filed by her father, Sub-Inspector Narsimha Goud.
According to the family, Rajitha met Rohit during her postgraduate studies in psychology. At the time, she was interning at a mental health facility in Banjara Hills, where Rohit had been admitted as a patient. After receiving counselling from Rajitha, his mental condition reportedly improved. Rohit, who claimed to be a software engineer, later proposed to her. With support from both families, they got married.
After the wedding, Rohit allegedly stopped working and began spending Rajitha’s earnings on parties and personal expenses. Despite her repeated requests, he refused to change his behaviour. Her family alleges that Rohit, along with his parents, Kishtaiah and Surekha, and his brother Mohit, subjected her to regular harassment. On several occasions, Rohit reportedly demanded money and physically assaulted her when she refused.
Unable to bear the pressure, Rajitha first attempted to end her life on July 16 by consuming sleeping pills. She was admitted to a private hospital and later discharged into her parents' care. However, on July 28, she made another attempt by jumping from the bathroom window of their fourth-floor apartment. She sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Ameerpet, where doctors declared her brain dead. Rajitha passed away on Tuesday.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to her death.
