Hyderabad: Residents of Pragathi Nagar in Nizampet are raising concerns over the arbitrary construction of speed breakers on the main road, allegedly by municipal authorities, which has led to severe traffic congestion and public inconvenience.

Locals report that the construction work, which ideally should be carried out during night hours to minimize disruption, is being done throughout the day. This is causing long traffic jams, especially during peak hours, with motorists and residents struggling to reach their destinations. Several commuters reported being stuck in traffic for over two hours without any intervention from the authorities.

Sai Teja, a resident of Pragathi Nagar, told Hyderabad Mail, “These speed breakers are like mountains. People are experiencing back pain and new drivers are facing trouble, especially at Elephant Circle where vehicles are rolling back.”

He added, “No one objects to the construction of speed breakers if they are built as per Indian Road Congress (IRC) norms. But these are built without proper dimensions, markings, or safety measures. They look like walls on the road. There are guidelines that specify the size and design, but these have been ignored. People are falling off two-wheelers and suffering injuries.”

Sai Teja also criticized the timing of the roadwork, saying, “These repairs should be done at night. Doing them in the morning is causing massive traffic jams and affecting daily commuters. Instead of solving problems, officials are creating new ones. If left unaddressed, these speed breakers could become fatal.”

A similar issue has been reported in Alakapuri Township, Manikonda, where residents have flagged unscientific speed breakers that lack rainwater drainage, leading to waterlogging and unsafe road conditions.

A post by local group Apna Manikonda (@ManikondaM88292) read, “In Alakapuri Township, Manikonda, unscientific raised speed breakers without any rainwater passages are causing severe flooding and making roads uncommutable. Clear violation of IRC guidelines and road safety norms. Who's responsible? #Manikonda #UrbanFlooding @ManikondaMc”

Residents across both areas are urging civic authorities to act immediately and reconstruct the speed breakers in compliance with safety standards, with proper markings and drainage provisions, to ensure the safety and convenience of commuters.
