PDSU demands Allu Arjun's arrest after stampede death at Pushpa 2 premiere in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) of Telangana State on December 5, 2024, has called for the arrest of Tollywood actor Allu Arjun following a tragic incident during the premiere screening of Pushpa 2: The Rule at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad. The incident resulted in the death of a woman, Revathi, and left her son hospitalised after a stampede broke out.
In a letter, the PDSU blamed Allu Arjun for the chaos, stating, “Revathi lost her life due to the irresponsibility of Allu Arjun. His actions triggered the stampede, which caused her death and led to several others being hospitalised. Allu Arjun failed to take responsibility in a situation with such a large crowd of fans. His presence escalated the chaos.”
The PDSU also criticised the high ticket prices for the film, which have reached up to Rs 3,000, placing a financial burden on poorer and middle-class moviegoers. “The investments in the film are motivated by profit, taking advantage of fans' enthusiasm,” the letter stated.
The PDSU further condemned the film industry's role in creating such incidents, saying, “While films are meant to entertain, they should not lead to tragedies. The industry must be held accountable for the consequences of their actions.”
The union also raised concerns about law enforcement practices. “Authorities often restrict peaceful protests, citing law and order concerns. However, no such restrictions were imposed during a high-profile film event with a large crowd,” they noted.
PDSU leaders criticised the government for prioritising profits from film ticket sales over the struggles of farmers, who continue to face low crop prices. The union has demanded that a case be filed against Allu Arjun and called for his immediate arrest. They warned that if their demands are not met, they will block the screening of Pushpa 2 across the state.
