Ola, Uber, and Rapido drivers in Hyderabad to boycott airport trips over unfair fare structures

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU) in Hyderabad has launched a campaign to boycott airport trips facilitated by Ola, Uber, and Rapido. This is in response to the low fares imposed by these companies, which the union claims are severely impacting drivers' livelihoods. The TGPWU has urged the government to implement a standard fare structure to ensure fair pay and sustainable livelihoods for gig and platform workers. The union is also urging passengers to support the boycott until fares are adjusted to fair levels. They are raising awareness about the challenges faced by gig and platform workers and demanding government intervention to regulate aggregator pricing.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU), led by Founder President Shaik Salauddin, has launched a campaign to boycott airport trips facilitated by Ola, Uber, and Rapido. This decision comes in response to the ongoing issue of low fares imposed by these aggregator companies, which have severely impacted the livelihoods of cab drivers.

Despite multiple appeals to the government and transport department, requesting a uniform and fair pricing structure for aggregator services, no concrete action has been taken. The TGPWU is calling for the government to implement a standard fare structure to ensure fair pay and sustainable livelihoods for gig and platform workers.

Shaik Salauddin said, "Our members have consistently raised concerns about exploitative fare structures. These low fares not only reduce driver earnings but also undermine their time and efforts. The government must act immediately to introduce a uniform fare policy that benefits both drivers and passengers."

As part of its campaign, the TGPWU is urging passengers to support the boycott of airport trips until fares are adjusted to fair and sustainable levels. The union is also raising awareness about the challenges faced by gig and platform workers and demanding government intervention to regulate aggregator pricing.

The TGPWU official account on X (formerly Twitter) posted, "Attention Hyderabad Airport Travelers: Drivers from Ola, Uber, and Rapido are facing unfairly low fares for airport trips, forcing many to decline such rides. We demand platform companies ensure fair pay for drivers' hard work." The post also included the hashtag #AirportBoycott.

The union is calling on both drivers and the public to join the movement for fair pay and better treatment of gig and platform workers.
