Protest at Chakali Ilamma Women’s University: Students demand postponement of exams
Hyderabad: Students of Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University (VCIWU) staged a sit-in protest in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s chamber on Thursday, demanding the administration to postpone the final examinations. They also raised slogans like “V-C down, V-C down.”
Expressing their frustration over the lack of basic amenities in the university hostels, the students also demanded essential facilities on campus, including functional washrooms and better maintenance in dormitories.
The university’s tentative circular about the final examinations has infuriated the students who said their regular classes have been affected for a few weeks due to the ongoing protest by the contractual assistant professors of 12 universities across Telangana.
Telangana Contract Assistant Professors Joint Action Committee has been demanding the regularisation of their jobs. They also held a ‘Chalo Osmania’ programme at Osmania University on Thursday.
The contractual faculty members said that the Congress government had promised job regularisation of the contractual teachers in the poll manifesto and failed to fulfill it. They have now introduced GO 21 for new recruitment for regular teaching faculty in the state universities.
The protesting students claimed that even the minimum facilities such as clean drinking water, proper sanitation, and regular maintenance were missing in the hostels.
"We are facing several hardships. Apart from lack of basic amenities, the mosquito menace has made our lives miserable," the students said.
The students also complained of poor lighting on campus. We avoid venturing out of the hostel after sunset as there are no lights and we are forced to use a flashlight on our mobile phones to even go to the washrooms, they added.
