Musi river floods Hyderabad, over 1,500 residents shifted
HYDERABAD: Heavy rains triggered flooding in the Musi river, forcing the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to evacuate residents from several low-lying colonies and relocate them to temporary rehabilitation centres.
Over 1,500 residents moved to relief camps
GHMC officials said more than 1,500 residents from vulnerable localities were shifted to schools, community halls, religious sites and other shelters. Commissioner R V Karnan directed officials to identify families at risk and move them to safety.
In Shanker Nagar, about 450–500 residents were accommodated at Shahzadee Masjid, where Malakpet MLA Ahmed Balala and the local deputy commissioner inspected arrangements. Two community halls in Moosanagar housed around 150 residents.
Forty-five families from Durga Nagar and Ambedkar Nagar near Moosarambagh bridge were moved to Lanka Government High School. Another 21 families from Durga Nagar stayed on upper floors of their homes. In Krishna Nagar near Golnaka Kamela, 32 residents were shifted to the local community hall, while 55 people from the Bhoo Laxmi temple area were relocated to the GHMC community hall at Gode-ki-Khabar.
Schools, temples and halls serve as shelters
Authorities confirmed that food and basic amenities are being provided at all centres. “We request residents in catchment areas to take precautions and cooperate with the administration,” Karnan said.
Officials said the release of water from Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs increased inflows into the Musi, worsening the situation.
Flooding damages Moosarambagh bridge works
Floodwaters inundated colonies around Moosarambagh, raising concern over the under-construction high-level bridge. Locals said centering material had been washed away and iron rods had bent. “The bridge has started sinking gradually. If the river’s force continues, there could be a major accident,” a resident said.
Officials said they would reinforce the structure once water levels recede. Some residents alleged faulty centering due to the contractor’s inexperience.
DRF rescues four from ORR floods
Meanwhile, four people trapped in floodwaters on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) service road between Narsingi and Manchirevula were rescued on Friday night. Officials said water gushed onto the stretch after gates of Osman Sagar were lifted.
Despite barricades, an auto-trailer carrying four passengers attempted to cross and got stuck midway. Disaster Response Force personnel and police rescued all occupants and later pulled out the vehicle by tying it with a rope to a DRF vehicle.
Karnan said officials are on 24-hour alert and he is reviewing the ground situation with senior staff at regular intervals.
