Musheerabad man duped of Rs. 13.4 lakh in online betting scam via WhatsApp, Instagram
Hyderabad: A 24-year-old resident of Musheerabad was duped of ₹13.42 lakh in an online betting scam after being contacted by a woman claiming to represent “Sapphire Betting Casino.”
The victim received a WhatsApp call from a person identifying herself as Miss Aarya. She introduced an investment opportunity that promised high returns. To gain his trust, she repeatedly contacted him, shared her Instagram profile, and conducted video calls showing what she claimed were operations of the betting platform. She also provided fake profit updates and incentives.
Initially, the victim transferred ₹10,000 via UPI. Over time, influenced by continued pressure and manipulated by fake profit claims, he made multiple transfers, eventually sending a total of ₹13,42,778 to various UPI IDs and bank accounts. Realizing he had been scammed, the victim approached the Cyber Crime Police Station in Hyderabad and filed a complaint.
Public Advisory from Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police:
- Do not trust investment offers received via WhatsApp, Instagram, or unknown numbers.
- Avoid investing based on video calls, social media profiles, or screenshots.
- Do not send money to personal UPI IDs or bank accounts of unknown individuals.
- No legitimate company will pressure you to invest or repeatedly call you.
- Always verify platforms through SEBI or RBI-authorized websites.
- Do not download APK files or join private apps/groups for trading or investment.
- Be cautious of psychological manipulation and pressure tactics.
- Preserve all communication, including call records, messages, and transaction details.
