Hyderabad:  Bhoodan Pochampally, known globally for its Ikat sarees and handloom traditions, welcomed 25 Miss World contestants from African countries on Thursday, May 15, 2025. The visit showcased the rich cultural heritage of Telangana and highlighted Pochampally as a global handloom tourism destination.

The contestants were given a traditional welcome at the entrance of the Handloom Tourism Park with garlands, vermilion, and greetings from locals in traditional attire. Their entry was accompanied by Runja instrumentals, Nadaswaram music, and Kolatam performances, setting the tone for a vibrant cultural experience.

The visitors explored the intricate process behind Ikat weaving, observing every step from yarn winding to dyeing. Many expressed admiration for the time and craftsmanship involved in producing each saree. Some even tried their hand at spinning yarn using the charkha and interacted closely with local artisans. The park also featured live demonstrations, exhibitions of handloom products from Pochampally, Venkatagiri, Gollabhama, and Narayanpet, and Mehndi stalls. The contestants received traditional henna designs and participated enthusiastically in the photo sessions.

In the amphitheater, a special video screened the history and legacy of Bhoodan Pochampally and its role in India’s handloom story. A fashion show followed, where local models showcased handwoven Ikat garments on stage. The Miss World contestants responded with cheers and applause, later mingling with the models and appreciating their work. Local residents attended in large numbers and enjoyed the event.

District Collector M. Hanumantha Rao highlighted the global recognition of Pochampally Ikat, calling it a unique craft sustained over generations. He noted that the boiling, twisting, and dyeing process used in Pochampally is found nowhere else and continues to support the livelihoods of many local women. MLA Kumbham Anil Kumar Reddy highlighted the region’s centuries-old weaving tradition and its UNESCO recognition. The district administration honored the Miss World contestants with Ikat garments and handloom bags as souvenirs.

The event was part of the rural outreach initiative linked to the Miss World tour, with the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district administration overseeing arrangements. Officials including State Art Gallery Director Korra Lakshmi, Rachakonda CP Sudheer Babu, DCP Akshansh Yadav, and Tourism Park MD Upender Reddy were present. Spanning over three hours, the program offered an immersive experience in Telangana’s handloom heritage and created meaningful cultural exchanges between global guests and local communities.
