About Kinnera Mogulaiah

Darshnam Mogulaiah, born in 1951, is an esteemed artist from Telangana and one of the few surviving performers of the tribal musical instrument known as the Kinnera. This stringed instrument, similar to a veena, has its origins traced back to as early as the 4th century CE and is indigenous to nomadic tribes and Dalit communities in the Deccan Plateau.

Mogulaiah's ancestors were pioneers in the craft of making and playing kinneras with varying numbers of steps. His father created a nine-stair kinnera, while Mogulaiah himself was the first to develop a 12-stair version, making him the only artist who both constructs and plays this unique instrument. In recognition of his contributions as a Kinnera musician, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri award in 2022.
