Medchal DTF police seize 85 packets of ganja chocolates in Thumkunta
Medchal: On January 7, 2025, the Medchal District Task Force (DTF) police conducted a raid on a paan shop in Thumkunta. During the operation, they seized 85 packets of chocolates infused with ganja.
These chocolates were discovered at the residence of Chunchun Upender Mandal, a man originally from Darbhanga, Bihar.
Upender, who had relocated to Thumkunta to make a living, had been operating a paan shop for several months. Alongside regular paan, he was selling chocolates containing ganja. The illegal activity came to light following a tip-off.
Acting on the information, DTF Sub-Inspector Pawan Kumar Reddy, along with head constables Sattar and Venkateswara Rao, and constables Sanjay and Munaf, raided Upender's rented house in Thumkunta. During the search, they recovered 85 packets of ganja chocolates.
According to Pawan Kumar Reddy, Upender had been purchasing the chocolates from Bihar, where they cost Rs. 25 per packet (containing 40 chocolates), and selling them in Thumkunta for Rs. 10 per chocolate.
The seized ganja chocolates were handed over to the Medchal excise police, who have initiated further investigations into the matter.
Excise Enforcement Director VB Kamalasan Reddy praised the DTF team for their successful operation in curbing the illegal trade.
In a related case in September 2024, the Cyberabad Special Operations Team (SOT), in coordination with the Petbasheerabad police, intercepted a trafficking operation involving ganja-infused chocolates from Punjab. Authorities arrested a drug peddler named Tamk Issar Singh and seized 64 packets (totaling 12.68 kg) of ganja chocolates, which contained 2,560 individual chocolates. Additionally, they confiscated 80 grams of dry ganja and a mobile phone. The total estimated value of the seized items was Rs. 1,05,900.
Singh, a 55-year-old resident of Yellammabanda in Jagadgirigutta, had previously been involved in two criminal cases in the area. Police investigations revealed that Singh had procured the ganja chocolates from an unknown peddler in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. He was selling the chocolates to construction laborers and others for Rs. 40 per packet.
The arrest was made at the Suchitra X Road Auto Stand based on credible information provided to the SOT Madhapur team and Petbasheerabad police. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Koti Reddy, DCP Medchal Zone; D. Srinivas, DCP SOT, Cyberabad; and ADCP SOT 1.
Authorities have urged the public to report any information related to ganja sales by calling Dial 100, contacting the Cyberabad NDPS Enforcement Cell at 7901105423, or through the Cyberabad WhatsApp number at 9490617444. The identity of informants will be kept confidential.
