TGCSB Issues Advisory for Mahakumbh Devotees to Avoid Cyber Fraud
Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a warning for devotees planning to attend the upcoming Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, advising them to exercise caution when making travel arrangements, especially for online bookings of hotels, Dharamshalas, and guest houses. The 45-day event is expected to attract millions of visitors, creating an opportunity for cybercriminals to exploit demand for accommodations through fraudulent websites and booking links.
Cyber Fraudulent Booking Scams Fraudsters are targeting pilgrims by offering discounted rates for accommodation. They create fake websites and booking links to collect advance payments for hotels and other lodging facilities, without actually providing any reservations.
TGCSB Recommendations:
- Book accommodations only through official channels. Use verified contact numbers and websites from the Uttar Pradesh government. A list of approved accommodations is available at kumbh.gov.in.
- Avoid clicking on unknown links or ads offering accommodation at unusually low prices.
- Do not make advance payments to unverified accounts or through unofficial booking platforms.
- Confirm the authenticity of any accommodation by checking with official directories or state authorities.
- Be cautious about sharing personal or financial details online.
What to Do if You Fall Victim: If you suspect fraud or have been targeted, immediately:
- Disconnect from further communication with the scammer.
- File a complaint with the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or visit cybercrime.gov.in.
The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau encourages everyone to follow good cyber hygiene while planning their pilgrimage.
