Lorry driver dumps suspected chemical into Musi River at Bapughat
Hyderabad: A lorry driver was caught on video attempting to dump a substance, suspected to be hydrochloric acid, into the Musi River at Bapughat, within the jurisdiction of the Rajendranagar Police Station in Hyderabad.
According to locals, the driver arrived with the acid and began unloading it into the already polluted river. The entire act was recorded on video. However, before the police could reach the scene, the driver managed to flee, leaving the vehicle behind.
Speaking with Hyderabad Mail, Rajendranagar police confirmed that the incident is true. This incident has caused anger among local residents, particularly as the state government is actively working on the river’s restoration as part of its Musi rejuvenation programme.
Residents expressed their frustration, pointing out that such incidents undermine the government's efforts to restore the river and pose serious environmental and health risks. They highlighted that this was not the first incident of illegal dumping, and despite government initiatives, enforcement on the ground remains weak. They warned that such negligence would only worsen the ecological damage to the Musi River.
The Rajendranagar Police stated that a case is being filed, and samples will be collected by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) officials to determine the nature of the substance. Efforts are underway to locate the vehicle’s owner and investigate the origin of the material.
