Lalaguda resident defrauded of Rs. 32.2 lakhs in fake ED warrant scam
Hyderabad: An 83-year-old retired government employee from Lalaguda, Hyderabad on June 23, 2025, lost ₹32.2 lakhs in a scam involving fake legal threats and forged government documents. The incident began with a phone call claiming that an arrest warrant had been issued against the victim under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.
According to the police, the caller shared a forged Enforcement Directorate (ED) notice containing the victim’s Aadhaar number, age, and counterfeit seals to make the threat appear legitimate.
The fraudsters, posing as ED officials and police personnel, pressured the man to stay silent and warned of his immediate arrest and transfer to Mumbai along with his wife. The threats caused significant distress and panic.
Under pressure, the victim transferred ₹32.2 lakhs in multiple transactions, believing the money was required to “settle the case.” Later, the scammers demanded additional amounts as "loyalty payments," claiming they were for those who had "helped resolve the issue." They falsely assured the victim that a government refund and compensation would follow.
Even after the victim stopped sending money, the fraudsters continued to contact him to maintain the illusion. The victim eventually realised the fraud and reported the matter to the national cybercrime portal.
