Hyderabad: BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, announced that she will undertake a 72-hour hunger strike from August 4 to 6, demanding the implementation of 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, education, and employment.

Speaking at a press conference at the Somajiguda Press Club alongside leaders from the United Phule Front and various BC organizations, Kavitha said the protest will be held at Dharna Chowk, Indira Park, from 11 a.m. on August 4 to 11 a.m. on August 6.

Kavitha criticized both the Congress-led state government and the BJP-led central government for failing to act on their commitments regarding BC reservations. She said the Telangana government had passed a separate bill on 42% BC reservation in both the Assembly and the Council, but it remains pending for Presidential assent. An ordinance has also been passed, but no further action has been taken.

“Both the BJP and Congress are playing hide and seek with the BCs of Telangana,” she said. “The Congress says the BJP has to act, and the BJP is silent. To increase pressure on both, I have decided to undertake this hunger strike in Hyderabad. Hopefully, either the central government or the Congress government will respond and fulfill the demand.”

Kavitha highlighted that the demand is based on poll promises made to the BC community and urged both governments to take immediate action.
